The Long Walk
This is the one for people who want distance. Six days south of the village on the road the caravans took toward Timbuktu, far enough out that the horizon has nothing on it at all.
Day 1
Out of the village on foot in the afternoon, first night in the sand within sight of the last palms.
Day 2
Into open ground. The vegetation thins and then stops.
Day 3
An old ksar, abandoned when the Drâa stopped reaching this far. We eat in the shade of its walls.
Day 4
The big dunes. The climb is slow but the view from the top is the reason people come back.
Day 5
A village the river left behind, and the last night out.
Day 6
North, back to M'hamid, arriving around midday.
