Marrakech to Erg Chigaga

The classic southern loop, run from the desert end rather than sold from Marrakech. You cross the Atlas, follow the Draa through the palm groves, and leave the road behind at M'hamid for the two hours of track that take you into Erg Chigaga.

Day by day

Day 1

Marrakech early, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas. A stop at the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, then Ouarzazate and down into the Draa valley through Agdz. Night in the valley.

Day 2

South along the Draa to Zagora and Tamegroute, then M'hamid El Ghizlane, where the tarmac ends. Two hours of track west into Erg Chigaga. Sunset on the dunes, dinner and the night in our camp.

Day 3

Sunrise over the erg, then out across the plain past the dry Lake Iriqui towards Foum Zguid, and north through Taznakht back to Marrakech in the evening.

Good to know The driving days are long — this is a big country and the desert is genuinely far. If you would rather take it slowly, we can make it four or five days with more time in the dunes.
